2008 CONCERT PROGRAM AND OTHER EVENTS


Details of the Guitar Society's 2008 concert programme and other forthcoming events are regularly updated. Please bookmark this page and return at a later date for more information.
13 May 2008 (Tuesday)AUGUST THIRD - 'feature band' gig. August Third will present a 40 minute 'feature' set of original songs at the Leederville Hotel. The night starts out at 8:00pm with a variety of local acts performing originals and covers before August Third takes centre-stage at around 9:30. August Third boasts a unique blend of classical guitar, African percussion, keyboards, vocals, violin and flute with fresh tunes influenced by Latin, Jazz, Classical, Pop, African and World music. Come along for an evening of free, live music as you soak up the vibes and enjoy a drink or two. Venue: Leederville Hotel.
28 May 2008 (Wednesday)DEADLINE: for entries into the Internation Guitar Ensemble Festival.
30 May 2008 (Friday)DUNCAN GARDINER AND AUGUST THIRD: Friday@Floreat series. The concert will feature the solo talents of guitarist Duncan Gardiner as well as the power-of-three with Perth’s newest acoustic act August Third. Duncan will present a range of original works, pieces composed for him by friends and specially selected gems. August Third boasts a fresh acoustic sound and a unique blend of classical guitar, African percussion, keyboards, vocals, violin and flute. Their original music is influenced by sounds derived from Latin, Jazz, Classical, Pop, African and World music. Proceeds go to the church mission fund. Venue: Floreat Uniting Church (50 Berkeley Cres, Floreat). Time: 7:30pm start. Tickets: $20, $15, $10 (includes light refreshments). To reserve tickets please call Marie on 9385 8537.
4 June 2008 (Wednesday)DUO DIAVOLO: St Georges Cathedral Lunch-time concert. Duo Diavolo perform orIginal compositions, Celtic favourites, Gypsy Swing and Latin show-stoppers in this refreshing lunch-time break concert. The programme will also include two rarely heard works by French impressionist composer Jacques Ibert. Venue: St Georges Cathedral (St Georges Tce, Perth)Time: 12:00 noon. Tickets: $8, $5.
8 June 2008 (Saturday)PLAYERS FORUM: North Perth Lesser Town Hall, View St North Perth. Commences at 4:15pm.
25 July 2008 (Friday)RAFAEL ANDIA & ALHAMBRA QUARTET: Australian tour - "The Guitars of Picasso". The Guitars of Picasso is inspired by Cocteau’s dream to “hear the sounds of Picasso’s Guitars”. The Guitar Quartet presenting this project is Rafael Andia, professor of Guitar at the prestigious Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, and Claire Sananikone, a brilliant student from the Paris Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique. They are joined by duo Eric Cathan and Giuseppe Zangari, performers and staff at the University of Newcastle. One highlight will be the Australian premiere of Mr Andia’s composition, INMEMORIAL "sobre temas revolucionarios" for two equal guitars written to give a “voice” to Picasso’s celebrated painting “Guernica”. 22 August 2008 (Friday)FESTIVAL GUEST ARTIST CONCERT: Music Auditorium, WA Academy of Performing Arts, 2 Bradford St Mt Lawley, commencing at 7:00 pm.
23-24 August 2008 (Saturday-Sunday)INTERNATIONAL GUITAR ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL: Churchlands Senior High School. Festival Guest Artists - Slava and Leonard Grigoryan.
24 September 2008 (Wednesday)GUITARFEST: 7:30 pm, Music Auditorium, WA Academy of Performing Arts (2 Bradford St, Mt Lawley). A plucked string spectacular directed by Freddie Brigson and Jonathan Paget where the worlds of classical and jazz guitar collide in an explosion of creativity and colour. Tickets $20 Full, $15 Concession/Friends of the Academy. Bookings through WAAPA Box Office, open 29 July 2008.
